Dear Elizabeth,
I remember the night that you were born so clearly. I had been waiting and waiting and waiting for you to come. Fourteen days and nights had passed since your due date. Fourteen more days to feel your kicks. Fourteen more days to anticipate who you might be.
The doctor called me on this very afternoon 7 years ago and told me to come on in to the hospital. I tried to take a nap, just in case my new baby needed me all night. I couldn't rest. Daddy and I were too excited. Today would be your birthday.
You came out crying and right away we could see the beginnings of your beautiful red hair. Your skin was so fair and your cheeks pink. When you would cry your whole body would light up like a flame. Some people say that red heads aren't patient or get angry easily. That's not true of you.
We were so excited that God gave us you that night. And now that we've known you all of these years, we love you all the more. You are a bright star in my sky, Betsy. You are always thinking of ways to make others smile. You love God and His ways. You delight in the small things. You are honest, full of feelings, and very creative. I appreciate the ways in which you include Joseph in your play. You make him feel very special and included. He really looks up to you, his big sister and friend.
You told me today that Rebekah likes everything that you do. She likes pink, because of you. Her favorite princess is Ariel, because yours is. She is watching you closely and learning what it means to be mature and responsible. God knew just what He was doing when He placed you in our family.
You've grown so much this year, Elizabeth. It used to be harder for you to try new things, but now you jump right in and give it a go even if it may be a little scary. You pulled out your first loose tooth without crying. You go under water now and are swimming better every day. You are becoming a very good reader, too. You're growing up Bets and I love every day I am with you.
Love,
Mom
