Sean, Hannah and Lydia are consumed this week with Music Man rehearsals. So it's me and the younger five fending for ourselves here. I'm always amazed at how family dynamics change when there is a different mix of kids.
Tonight at the dinner table our discussion revolved about noses- who has put what up their nose and how Mom managed to get it out. I'm proud to report that all but Baby John (though I know he was taking notes from his high chair) had their own story to tell.
Miriam put an Altoid up her nose and kept sucking it in instead blowing it out. The thing was melting and the peppermint was making her eyes water profusely. It looked painful!
Elizabeth wedged a polly pocket shoe in her nostril in the spot that goes around the curve that is really hard to reach even with tweezers. That was a scare. After that incident I vacuumed up those shoes whenever they were laying on the floor.
Joseph got a pencil eraser stuck sideways in his nose. His nose started to run and made the thing so slippery I could barely get a hold of it. He kept sucking it in, too.
Rebekah shoved a rather large Lego up her nose. Thankfully, it didn't stretch her nostril out permanently. Now that would be a new trend!
How about your kids? What weird things have they stuck up their noses and how ever did you get it out?

How original! :) I think we've just had one thing up a child's nose. All I remember was that it was hollow, so with care we could get it out with tweezers. A sister of mine did get a raisin up her nose as a child...
Dried play-doh... doesn't stay dried forever. The doctor's office gave me a tip that I've used since then for other fun things. :) Plug one side of the nose and have them blow out the other. Eventually a large, slimy blob of play-doh came out. Yum.
I remember my sister sticking a tiny piece of straw/wood from a wicker basket thingy up her nose...
And my brother used to snort in spaghetti noodles and cough them back out his mouth so half would be sticking out his mouth the other half still hanging out his nose. (He was the same brother who used to swallow pennies, dimes, nickels, and even quarters ALL the time.)
Amazingly (especially since we only have boys!!), we have never had any foreign objects stuck up noses--only snot. However, Tim is the master of nose cleaning out. The boys generally run FAST when they see him coming with a kleenex because they know a full scale operation is coming.
Oh my WORD. How funny! And scary! I'm dreading the Polly Pocket stage. I hear they're awful but kids love them so much so you have to do them.
Where are they learning this behavior??? hehehe Fortunately we haven't dealt with this but I'm sure it'll happen at some point. :)

My brother packed his nose with peas one Thanksgiving. I mostly just remember my mother freaking out. She was afraid they would end up in his ear. Is that even possible?
I know most kids put things up their nose, but mine like to be different, I guess. They like to put their fingers into odd places and then they can't get them out. Izzi got her finger stuck in a play tube at Holiday World and employees had to come help get her out. It took over an hour. Wil would kill me for telling you this, so shhhh! But last month, the kids were listening to me read out loud and Wil, especially, has always had the habit of just doing weird stuff without thinking about it when he's preoccupied. Well, that day he was playing with one of those plastic magnetic letters. You know, the ones on your refrigerator for little hands to play with? He got his finger stuck in a letter 'a' so badly, that it cut off his circulation and after about 45 minutes and butter and oil and lotion and cold water, his finger was so swollen and he was crying in pain. I tried to cut it off but couldn't without cutting him so I was going to take him the emergency room. The fact that he WANTED me to despite what was sure to be a hugely embarrassing thing told me how bad it hurt and how desperate he was. We stopped by my parents house on the way there, and my dad was able to use various tools and finally got it off. :-)
Sissy put a pea up her nose at the dinner table one night. When I frantically called the pediatrician because I couldn't get it out, she couldn't stop laughing at me! Finally, when she caught her breath, she told me to squeeze enough saline up Sissy's nostril that it would push it back through the other side. I guess it worked because we didn't get a pea patch growing out of her nose!
None so far, but I am sure it will happen one day, LOL!
My nephew somehow wedged a piece of a sponge up his nose when he was 3 (he's going on 18)--I kept telling my sister that he smelled funny, but she couldn't smell it, LOL. Finally, enough people complained to her and she took him to the doctor!

Now that is really funny!! We don't have any nose stories, but Josiah has put a toy or two in his EARS... silly child!
My son, Samuel thought it would be a good source of entertainment to stick a penny into his nose while on a long vacation ride a few years back. I did not think it was funny at the time (with several little ones in tow including a sleeping baby)! I threatened him, not so nicely, that he better get it out so we did not end up taking a several hour detour to the ER. He eventually did manage to get it out! We also have had a little one get a blade of grass stuck in their throat and wads of toilet paper stuck in the nose. Kids can be so strange!
Good to know what I have to look forward to with my four! No doubt every kid shoves a little something where it doesn't belong - too curious! So funny!
